The UK authorities has included an additional eleven further nations to its official alert roster regarding the risks of methanol toxicity from tainted beverages.

This updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Only last month, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after multiple serious events like the fatal demise of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can lead to vision loss or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic substance often used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for ingestion.

While it is generated during the creation of spirits, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

However in some countries, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Travelers

Government minister the minister said that each tourist should know the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, choose reputable establishments and avoid local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister said.
