The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. Yet, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To quantify this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is partially evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming appears particularly strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a wide array of unique mechanics.
Several the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year so far.
If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
