Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
