Heartbroken Hong Kong Residents Shocked as Massive Blaze Destroys Housing Complexes

"Approaching the area, the temperature increases and you can feel it, with the fumes being extremely thick."

University student Thomas Liu was among the countless people attracted to the site of a deadly fire that swept through large portions of the eight-block housing complex in the region's Tai Po area.

No fewer than over three dozen individuals have perished in yesterday's catastrophic blaze to date, with many still unaccounted for, leading to expectations that this figure will likely increase.

"It's a disaster," Thomas stated about the fire, adding that he had seen a victim being taken away from the location.

More than a 1,000 further residents were forced to leave the estate as the flames expanded, with several making their way to temporary shelters that have been organized to house them.

The inferno is slowly being controlled, but officials report they cannot determine when it will be fully put out.

Blazes could be witnessed issuing from separate homes as many onlookers watched in stillness.

"I feel heartbroken. The building contains so countless neighbors and acquaintances. I do not know what is happening anymore. Look, all the apartments are just on fire. I cannot determine what to do. I pray the authorities can support us to rebuild after this."

One local woman stated that her acquaintances dwell inside the structure and she was waiting to discover if they managed to evacuate.

A long-term resident, who has lived in block two of the residential estate for more than four decades years, mentioned listening to "an extremely loud sound" and observing flames break out in a close building.

"I immediately went inside to collect my belongings," the elderly occupant commented.

"I am uncertain how I emotionally right now. I'm just considering about where I'm going to rest tonight because I almost certainly won't be able to go re-enter my residence."

Although the source of the blaze that consumed the multiple tall structures continues to be unknown, the flames are believed to have spread quickly through the bamboo scaffolding that surrounded the structures, which were undergoing improvements.

Several individuals have voiced anger that such a large-scale incident could have happened and questioned the response.

"During there's a forest fire, they will employ choppers and drop extinguishing materials, but why is there no such deployment and how can they allow other buildings burning?" asked a different occupant of Wang Fuk Court.

"The community is so near to the fire station and we assumed the blaze could be put out rapidly, but presently the fire has spread. I'm so discouraged," she added.

The resident mentioned that she had been offered no instructions from the government on where to seek help.

Multiple local inhabitants had delivered necessities to the affected individuals - including dozens of blankets and thermal aids.

During interviews about their feelings regarding the blaze, locals voiced that "authorities is unprepared" and that they were "immensely distraught".

"We desire not to experience any more fatalities," remarked one.

A senior woman who lives in an apartment in the impacted buildings mentioned she was absent when the incident broke out but that she is anxious about her residence because it is not insured.

"I'm very troubled that I have no residence to go to currently," she remarked.
