Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then discovered many other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in association with the incident," they added.

Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for details.

A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism left him speechless and had to be resolved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
